Dr. Daniel R. Altschuler Stern, is professor of Physics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus.

Early in his career he undertook research in the study of active galactic nuclei, using the Arecibo and other radio telescopes around the world. He was appointed as Senior Research Associate and Director of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center’s, Arecibo Observatory in 1995, a post he held until 2003.

He returned to the UPR, focusing on the Public Understanding of Science, a concern which leads to many articles in the press, conferences and books. “Hijos de las Estrellas” (Akal, Madrid), published by Cambridge University Press as “Children of the Stars”, has been recently updated to a fourth edition.

For his work he was awarded the 2010 Andrew Gemant Award of the American Institute of Physics.
